OCIS2020
TRAVEL BURSARIES
& SCHOLARSHIPS

A principle objective of the OCIS conference is to bring together the broad community of international studies scholars, to help build networks and encourage collaboration. The Organising Committee for OCIS 2020 is highly committed to this objective and have put together the following bursaries and scholarships for postgraduate students and early career researchers.

  • 10 Higher Degree Research (HDR) travel bursaries, funded by the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, The Australian National University (ANU)
  • 10 Early Career Researcher (ECR) travel bursaries for emerging scholars from Australia and the Asia-Pacific Region, funded by the Department of International Relations, Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs (ANU)
  • 10 fully-funded scholarships for scholars from Pacific Island Countries, funded by the Department of Pacific Affairs, Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs (ANU)

Key dates for travel bursary and scholarship applications

  • Applications close – Tuesday 31 December 2019 (Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT) UTC+11:00)
  • Success Notification – Late February 2020

  2. Email ocis2020@anu.edu.au with a single pdf attachment containing your cover letter, CV and supervisor’s letter. 

Higher Degree Research (HDR) Travel Bursary to attend OCIS

Funded by Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, ANU

 

This travel bursary is available to students who are enrolled, part-time or full-time, in a higher degree research program at a university in any area of International Studies. ‘Local’ HDR students (from the Greater Canberra area) are not eligible to apply.

There are up to TEN (10) HDR travel bursaries available and will provide funding as follows:

  • Students based in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, Northern Territory will be eligible for a maximum of $400 support
  • Those based in Western Australia and New Zealand, a maximum of $800 support
  • Students based in the Pacific, a maximum of $1,000 support
  • And those based internationally, a maximum of $1,500 support

Application process

  • Complete the online application form for OCIS Travel Bursaries & Scholarships
  • Email ocis2020@anu.edu.au and attach a single pdf which must include the listed three items, in the following order:
    1. A cover letter stating how you will benefit from attending the conference and why this bursary is necessary for you to be able to attend
    2. Your current CV
    3. A letter of support from your supervisor

Approvals and payment process

  • Successful awardees will be contacted via email in February 2020.
  • Bursaries will be paid to awardees after they have registered to attend the Conference.

Early Career Researcher (ECR) Travel Bursary to attend OCIS

Funded by Department of International Relations, Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, ANU

 

This scholarship is available to ECR scholars, defined as those who have graduated with a PhD in international studies since 2015, or students currently enrolled in an international studies PhD program, and are currently based at an academic institution in Australia or the broader Asia-Pacific region.

There are up to TEN (10) ECR travel bursaries available which will provide funding as follows:

  • Those based in Australia and New Zealand, a maximum of $800 support
  • And those based internationally, a maximum of $1,500 support

Awardees will also be invited to a dinner hosted by the Department of International Relations during the conference to network with each other and the Department community.

    1. A cover letter stating how you will benefit from attending the conference and why this bursary is necessary for you to be able to attend

Approvals and payment process

  • Successful awardees will be contacted via email in February 2020.
  • Bursaries will be paid to awardees after they have registered to attend the Conference.
  • The Department will provide a letter of invitation for visa purposes.

Pacific Island Country Scholarship to attend OCIS and the ‘State of the Pacific’ Conference

Funded by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through the Pacific Research Program, managed by the Department of Pacific Affairs (DPA), Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, ANU.

 

This scholarship is available to scholars from Pacific Island Countries who are available to attend both OCIS 2020 (29 June – 1 July), and straight after that, the DPA’s biennial ‘State of the Pacific’ conference (2 – 3 July 2020).

There are up to TEN (10) Pacific Island Country Scholarships available that cover the costs of economy return flights to Canberra, 5 – 6 night’s accommodation and conference registration.

Awardees will be hosted by DPA for the duration of both conferences.

    1. A cover letter stating how you will benefit from attending the conference and why this bursary is necessary for you to be able to attend

    3. A letter of support from your supervisor

Selection process

  • Selection will be based on the quality of your OCIS paper/panel proposal, and relevance to DPA’s research agenda – http://bit.ly/DPA-ResearchAgenda . Awardees are likely to be invited to speak at the ‘State of the Pacific’ conference.

Approvals and assistance with travel arrangements

  • Successful awardees will be contacted via email in February 2020.
  • DPA will provide a letter of invitation for Visa purposes and will assist with flights and accommodation through the conference travel partner.
